Farewell or Songbie(送别) was a very popular sentimental song of the Civil War era composed by the American doctor, composer, music entrepreneur, and politician John P. Ordway. The original song was named Dreaming of Home and Mother. Li Shutong was a master painter, musician, dramatist, calligrapher, seal cutter, and poet. He came to change the destiny of this melody by setting Chinese lyrics with a different meaning. These lyrics was his Farewell to his previous life as he decided to renunciate and became a buddhist monk in 1915. As he was now fully devoted to propagating Buddhism and its code of conduct he practised only calligraphy for the rest of his life, developing a simple and unadorned, yet unique style, which was treasured by everyone who received a sample. This song is now completely integrated in Chinese Culture and is more famous in the Far East than its ever was in the United States.

Instrumental arrangements does not have lyrics so more than anything it is an adaptation of Ordways' original music. However the meaning of Li Shutong’s words influenced the mood and character of this arrangement. In the first section the song is played in A major at first with only two treble voices to gradually introduce more and more voices. After a section with harmonics that modulates halfway through to the dominant key (E major) which starts the tremolo section. The way this tremolo is arranged is in many ways inspired by Agustin Barrios Mangoré. The melody is first played on the top register but later also in the low and middle. This is quite unusual in tremolo pieces. However it is a great example of how the melody does not necessarily be on the melody notes.
